You already know that the simplest thing to make with needle-felting is a bead or a ball. Let’s fantasize and felt a funny caterpillar from the balls. Even if you’re a beginner you can handle this work. The size of your caterpillar should be 6 cm (height) and 10 cm (length). First of all, you will need the wool of different colors (about 10 gr of each color). We will felt a green caterpillar – it is more natural, but you may choose any color you like – the brighter it will be the better. The beginners usually felt the simplest thing in needle-felting – a bead. We suggest you to go further and to felt a heart. If you are a newcomer do not panic: it is not difficult and very beautiful! You will need a piece of wool of any color you like, three needles (big, average and small) and a sponge. Let’s start. Take a piece of wool and give it a shape of a ball. When it is done take a big needle and start piercing our ball. The teeth on the needles are arranged in the special way to capture wool fibers easily while felting and thereby to seal the product. If you have a cat you should make a nice toy for it – a needle-felted mouse. Let’s begin with the base for the mouse. Take a piece of sintepon, make a ball from it, put on the sponge and begin piercing it with a big needle: the fibers of sintepon felt this way, and the ball becomes denser.

 

Now we need to cover the ball with the wool. For this we separate the pieces of wool from the skein and lay them out on the sintepon ball in several layers which should be perpendicular to each other. If you don’t see sintepon under the wool, it means that you can start felting the toy itself. It is better to start with a big needle, and when the surface of semi-product is felted enough you can take a fine needle to make the surface smooth (without wholes). Read the rest of this entry »

What kinds of brooches are usually sold in the shops? Flowers, flowers and flowers again! Don’t you want to have a unique brooch – beautiful and bright? We propose you to felt a cute giraffe brooch. Firstly we need to make a template. Draw a giraffe on the shit of paper. If you are not the best artist you may find a nice picture in the Internet and print it. After our picture is ready, cut out the template: the neck, the body and the legs. Note, that you should leave a head for a while

Put the template on the sponge and cover it with yellow (or orange) wool. Now start laying out the wool inside the paper template. Be careful! At first it is better to use a coarse needle. When the wool is laid out and pierced with the needle, you can remove the template: the figure of giraffe with legs and neck (but without head) is left on the sponge. Felting needles are basic tools for dry felting.

So what are peculiarities of felting needles, what kinds of them are available and when are they used? We’re going to go over these questions.

 

So the remarkable feature of a felting needle is indents, by means of which the needle pushes pieces of wool through layers of the same woolen pieces. Thus felting of the wool happens. The indents are hardly visible on a needle, but they are easily found by touching to them.
